No matter how much space your disk has, it will never be enough. I have a total of 3TB spaces–two of them are external hard drives–but now it seems I have to buy another one. I had analyzed the contents over and over again but there were only a few that can be removed. If you’re also interested in finding out which files and folders that are taking the most space, you can use a third-party tool since Windows doesn’t provide any built-in tool for this. There are many disk analyzers out there, but if you’re looking for simplicity and speed, then Wiztree is probably the best one. It took only 1.53 seconds to scan a 224GB drive when I tested it, which makes me think that this tool is probably the fastest disk space analyzer. It only works on NTFS drives, though, since it makes use of the MFT feature of NTFS drives to be able to scan faster.
In addition to the installer, the portable version is also available so users just have to unzip and run the program. It has a simple yet nice tabbed-interface. Pick any drive from the drop-down button and the app will scan it immediately. The information on how much space is used and how much space is left for the drive can be seen on the top area. The Tree View tab is where you can view the files and folders within the selected drive along with the information such as Size, the number of files and folders, modified date and attributes. You can expand any listed directory to view more information. The folders and files are listed from the largest to the smallest ones. If you want to find the largest files and folders quickly within the selected drive, you can click the “Top 1000 largest files” tab.
Aside from being a disk space analyzer, WizTree can also be used as a file management tool. You can delete, copy, move or perform any other basic file management operation directly from the interface.
Version reviewed: Portable WizTree 1.05
Indeed, it doesn’t have a sleek visual representative but it is good enough and, moreover, the speed is undeniably amazing. In short, this is a must-have disk analyzer tool for everyone. WizTree is compatible with 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Interested users can download it from the developer’s site.
